FAQ: Accommodations on Flathead Lake

Choosing where to take sailing lessons on a Flathead Lake vacation is easy because  Go Sail Montana is the only ASA-certified sailing school, not just on Flathead Lake, but in all of Montana. Yet, there are many options for Flathead Lake accommodations, making where to stay a more difficult choice. We hope our helpful guide to Flathead Lake accommodations makes planning your trip easier:

What types of Flathead Lake accommodations are available?

There are a variety of options to suit individual preferences and budgets, with different amenities like gorgeous views, breakfast, and private beach access. Here is a brief breakdown of some of the most popular types of Flathead Lake accommodations:

Campgrounds: Camping is the most economical option and the best way to maximize your time outdoors. Fortunately, there are abundant places to camp around the lake for both tents and RVs.

Cabins: Cabins are the best choice for a private and quiet retreat. In Montana, there are cabins for rent that are more than a century old, while others are modern and luxurious. Some of them even provide all the comforts of home such as a washing machine, kitchen, and living room.

Ranches and Lodges: The accommodation that delivers the most Old-West vibes is ranches and lodges. They often offer some of the same amenities as hotels, with a more rustic and authentic atmosphere.

Hotels and motels: There are numerous hotels and motels in the Flathead Valley, including both locally owned businesses and familiar chain hotels, which can be more economical. Some even offer amenities like breakfast and a swimming pool.

Yes, we have compiled a list of lodging options near our location in Dayton. The list does not include all available accommodation close to us, but there is a good variety.

Are there any lodging options on the Flathead Indian Reservation?

Absolutely! There are several tribally owned Flathead Lake accommodations on the reservation such as the KwaTaqNuk Resort & Casino in Polson.

When is the best time to book Flathead Lake accommodations?

Summer is the busiest season, so we recommend booking several months in advance. Fall and spring offer more availability and lower rates. There is another, smaller busy season in winter, particularly in Whitefish.

Where should I book my Flathead Lake lodging if I want more options for dining, nightlife, and shopping?

Polson, on the south end of the lake, and Bigfork on the north end are the more commercially active towns. Bigfork is also known for its thriving arts and culture scene. Additionally, Lakeside offers many options, but with a more limited selection. If you prefer a more secluded experience, book your Flathead Lake accommodations away from these areas.

Are any Flathead Lake accommodations available on the islands?

No. Thanks to the islands’ protected status, the public islands are for day use only, and most of them don’t even have an outhouse, much less a hotel.
