FAQ: Sailing Tours on Flathead Lake

diagramIf you take a trip to Flathead Lake, don’t miss out on the chance to admire the area’s breathtaking natural beauty by sailing the lake’s clean, calm water. If you don’t know how to sail yet, don’t worry! Hop aboard one of our comfortable sailboats and let an experienced captain show you all the lake has to offer. Here are some frequently asked questions about our popular sailboat tours on Flathead Lake:

What can I do on sailboat tours on Flathead Lake?

On a fully customizable sailing tour with Go Sail Montana there are endless opportunities for adventure. Some guests prefer to cruise as much of the lake as possible while taking in stunning views in every direction and practicing sailing. Wild Horse Island, known for its wildlife, is just two miles from our launch site, so it is a fantastic place to get out and explore. You could also seek out some of the smaller islands or have a picnic on the boat or a favorite spot along the shore.

Can I learn to sail on a boat tour?

Yes! While you will not earn any certification for your experience on a sailboat tour, we are always happy to give informal instruction and hands-on experience on our tours. We offer a special Discover More Sailing Class Tour which is designed for first-time sailors who want to test the ropes before they commit to taking sailing courses and for ASA 101 graduates who would like to refresh their skills.

Can I get off the boat to swim and explore during the tour?

Absolutely! There is a ladder at the back of the boat for this purpose. We will not sail up to the shore of any islands, but you may be able to swim to them. Remember to bring your own towels.

What are the best months to take boat tours on Flathead Lake?

Weather permitting, we sail from Memorial Day weekend until mid-September. June, July, and August provide the warmest weather and the least chance of rain.

What should I wear for a boat tour?

Temperatures can be twenty degrees cooler out on the water, so make sure you wear multiple layers. If you plan to swim, wear a bathing suit, and even if you don’t, remember to protect your skin from the sun, as you will be exposed for most of the three-hour tour.

Are there age restrictions for boat tours on Flathead Lake?

On our Sailing Charter Tour, everyone must be at least five years old. For our Discover More Sailing Class tour, the minimum is nine years old.

Can I bring my pet on the tour?

No, unfortunately, pets are not permitted on our sailboats.

What if the weather is bad on the day of my boat tour?

Safety is our top priority, so if the weather is unfavorable for sailing, we will cancel your reservation and give you a gift card for the full cost of the tour so that you can book it for another day.
