Event list for May in Flathead: races, festival, theater, rodeo, sailing.As springtime temperatures in northwestern Montana start to rise, the area comes alive with activity as it gears up for the summer season. Don’t miss these top Flathead Valley events throughout the month of May:

Spartan Trifecta (May 9 – 10)

Athletes will be pushed to their limits as the Spartan Trifecta Race returns to Bigfork this year. The weekend event features obstacle races for a variety of skill levels, including kids’ races. Bigfork’s mountains, rugged terrain, and fresh air provide the perfect setting for competitors and spectators to appreciate the endurance and grit on display.

Whitefish Marathon (May 16) 

Another athletic competition can be found in the Whitefish Marathon, with a start and finish line at Depot Park. Runners can choose to compete in the full marathon, half marathon, or 5 K race through some of Montana’s most breathtaking scenery. If you’re competing, you may attend as a spectator or volunteer to support the athletes and be a part of the celebratory atmosphere.

Bigfork Whitewater Festival (May 22 – 24) 

When snowmelt runoff from the surrounding mountains transforms into river rapids in the spring, it creates the ideal conditions for the Bigfork Whitewater Festival. Participants come from all over the world to compete in kayak and raft races on Swan River’s “Wild Mile.” Between races, the festival fires up with local businesses supplying food, drink, and music to pair exciting races with lively parties.

Little Shop of Horrors (May 22 – 24 and 28 – 31)

At the O’Shaughnessy Center, enjoy a night of local theater with Whitefish Theatre Company’s production of Little Shop of Horrors. This cult favorite musical combines dark humor, catchy rock songs, and a story that grows increasingly outrageous as it unfolds.

Brash Rodeo (May 23 and 28) 

One of the most popular Flathead Lake events for locals and visitors alike is the numerous rodeos that occur in the area. In May, Brash Rodeo is hosting two thrilling competitions. The family-friendly events offer a distinctly Western experience that is a reminder of the valley’s ranching roots and the traditions that continue to shape its identity.

Learn to Sail Courses (Memorial Day Weekend)

Be among the first to start sailing Flathead Lake this year with ASA-certified courses. If the weather is favorable, Go Sail will begin sailing on Memorial Day weekend, giving you the chance to learn new sailing skills early and enjoy months of practice before winter returns.

Glacier Symphony Orchestra Presents Grand Finale: “Resurrection” (May 30 – 31)

If you’re looking for Flathead Lake events offering a rich cultural experience, head to the Wachholz College Center in Kalispell for the Glacier Symphony Orchestra’s production of Mahler’s “Resurrection.” The massive five-movement work is one of Mahler’s most successful and utilizes a large orchestra, choir, and soloists to explore the existential themes of life, death, and spiritual rebirth.
