How to Start Montana Boating Season Off Right
After months of long winter waiting, the Montana boating season is finally here! While we are all eager to get outside and launch our boats, it is best to take some time to make sure you, your boat, and all the equipment are ready. Here are some steps we recommend taking to kick off the Montana boating season successfully:
Update Registrations and Permits
Before launching, make sure your boat is compliant with all of Montana’s boating laws. All motorized boats and sailboats over 12 feet with motors must be registered. Additionally, they must pass an Aquatic Invasive Species inspection, so if you have taken your boat to other locations, thoroughly drain, wash, and dry it before launching into Montana’s waters. Finally, verify that you have enough life jackets in the appropriate sizes for your passengers in accordance with the law.
Check Safety and Emergency Preparedness
The start of the Montana boating season is also the perfect time to check all safety equipment. Take a moment to verify that your first aid kit is up-to-date and complete. Ensure that your vessel has a functional flashlight, tools, whistle, and emergency floatation device. It is also best to have a working GPS and marine radio or cellphone with signal coverage in case of emergencies.
Prepare Your Boat
Winter storage can take a toll on your boat, and this is the opportunity to address any small maintenance tasks that may have been overlooked at the end of last season before starting the new Montana boating season. While your boat is still dry docked, inspect all the boat’s battery and electrical systems. You may also want to change the oil and filters.
For sailboats, inspect sails and rigging for wear or damage and halyards, sheets, and other control lines for fraying. Ensure the mast and boom fittings are secure and corrosion-free and that the rudder and keel are in good condition and properly aligned.
Take Sailing Lessons
If you’re feeling a little out of practice after months without sailing or you’ve been dreaming of taking your sailing abilities to the next level, sign up for sailing lessons as early as you can, so that you can spend as much of the Montana boating season as possible utilizing the newly acquired skills. Whether you are interested in racing, coastal sailing, or improving your basic keelboat handling, our American Sailing Association-accredited courses will set you up for success this season.
Get Ready for Your First Voyage
Now for the fun part! It’s time to chart your course and plan to make the most of the season. Montana has many beautiful lakes and rivers, so research which locations you want to explore this year. You may choose to return to familiar destinations, or perhaps you want to discover a new favorite. Check weather forecasts, seek advice from sailors familiar with the area, and confirm the location and availability of boat ramps.
We wish you a fun and safe Montana boating season!
