History of the Montana Cup

Even though Montana is a landlocked state, it boasts an impressive history of sailing, especially on the state’s largest body of water, Flathead Lake. Consequently, Montana’s small, intimate sailing communities love the opportunity to compete against each other in the summer months. Perhaps the most well-known sailing event in the state is The Montana Sailing Championships – Montana Cup Regatta.

What is the Montana Cup Regatta?

The Montana Cup Regatta was established by the Canyon Ferry Yacht Club in 1977 to promote and recognize team racing in the state. However, soon after, the race moved from Canyon Ferry Lake to Flathead Lake and transferred to the management of the North Flathead Yacht Club. Over the years, the event has grown in both size and reputation and draws competitors of various skill levels from across Montana and the Greater Pacific Northwest, making it the highlight of Montana’s sailing calendar.

What to Expect at This Year’s Eventdiagram

The 48th annual Montana Sailing Championships – Montana Cup Regatta will be held on the first weekend in August in beautiful Somers, Montana. The Flathead sailing community is known for its warmth and camaraderie, and this regatta prioritizes the Corinthian Spirit, ensuring that newcomers feel welcome. Attendees can enjoy music, meals, beer, and lawn games, or gather around the fire pit to talk sailing with people who share their passion. Of course, the highlight of the event is watching and participating in the exhilarating races. The Montana Cup Regatta is family-friendly.

The North Flathead Yacht Club is also committed to green sailing practices and preserving the pristine beauty of the lake. Therefore, all boats that are transported from outside of the area must be thoroughly cleaned, drained, and dried and must pass an Aquatic Invasive Species inspection before they launch. They also recommend you bring your own dishes and water bottles for social events.
