What Should I Do On Flathead Lake?
There are a few ways to enjoy one of Montana’s best boating lakes on a Flathead Lake vacation. The approximately 200 square miles of scenic waterways make it an excellent place to spend summer days.
Here are some ways to enjoy Flathead Lake:
-
- Book a captained cruise: Guests can take a 3-hour cruise with an ASA-certified captain, where they can enjoy breathtaking views and learn more about wildlife and sailing.
- Go kayaking: Guided tours let guests paddle up to 2 miles out, where they can enjoy Wild Horse Island State Park up close.
- Take ASA sailing courses: First-time sailors or visitors looking to continue developing their skills can take small-group classes with ASA sailing instructors, where they can qualify for an International Proficiency Certification (IPC).
- Rent a boat: Experienced sailors and their family and friends can rent sailboats on Flathead Lake for 3 to 6 hours at a time.
How Should I Choose Dates to Sail on Flathead Lake?
From late May through early September, Go Sail Flathead Lake offers ASA sailing courses for solo sailors and groups.
The best weather and sailing conditions are typically in July and August, when the water warms up and the afternoon winds are around 8 to 15 knots.
Sailors also choose to visit around the 4th of July or during special events, with festivities continuing through September.
While the ASA sailing courses are only available on weekends, charter sailboats and captained cruises are available on weekdays.
Where Should I Stay near Flathead Lake?
Guests visiting Flathead Lake typically arrive by car. If you’re traveling from another state, flying into Glacier Park International Airport (FCA) in Kalispell or Missoula International Airport (MSO) are the two most common options.
Once you arrive, there are several lodging options available.
Sailors typically stay in:
- Campgrounds: Such as Big Arm State Park Campground or the Flathead Lake RV Park.
