What is the history of Wild Horse Island?
For centuries, the Salish-Kootenai tribes pastured their horses on the island so that they would be safe from theft by other tribes. A small, wild herd can still be found on the island today.
In the early 1900s attempts were made to homestead on the land, but they were ultimately unsuccessful. Others later tried to establish private commercial ventures such as a dude ranch and cabins, but they also failed. The remnants of some of these abandoned buildings can still be found on the island.
In addition to the wild horses, the island is known for its herds of bighorn sheep, which were introduced in 1939 and have thrived ever since. Wild Horse Island has been a public state park since 1977.
How can I get to Wild Horse Island?
The island is only accessible by boat, but there are a variety of Wild Horse Island tours to choose from. If you prefer an adventure with the help of a guide who is knowledgeable about the area, you can take a kayak tour from Dayton, the closest spot on the mainland, located just two miles from the island. Another option is a sailboat tour, led by one of our experienced captains, offering a 360-degree view of Wild Horse and faster travel.
What do I need to know before visiting Wild Horse Island?
Wild Horse Island is a protected state park, so there are some rules that all visitors need to be aware of. For example, Wild Horse Island is for day use only, so camping, fires, and overnight stays are not allowed. Hunting is also forbidden, and a license from the Flathead Indian Reservation is required for fishing. Likewise, visitors must walk on established paths only and practice the “leave no trace” principle. This means that whatever you bring to the island must also be taken back with you when you leave. Dogs and other pets are not permitted on the island.
Please note that there are no public docks on Wild Horse Island, so visitors are advised to use one of the six designated landing sites. Additionally, there is only one public waterless toilet on the island.
What should I bring on a trip to Wild Horse Island?
Included in the Wild Horse Island tour by kayak is a life jacket, backpack, trail map, binoculars, a snack/lunch, and water. Be sure to wear sturdy, comfortable shoes and layers of clothing because the weather can change throughout the day. However, do not wear jeans or heavy boots because it is unsafe. Finally, shade is limited on the island, so protect yourself with sunscreen, hats, and sun-protective clothing.

The best time to visit is late spring through early fall (May-October) when the weather is pleasant, and wildlife is more active. Spring and early summer are ideal for seeing wildflowers and young animals.
