Experience the thrill of sailing with personalized instruction from one of our American Sailing-certified instructors on Flathead Lake. Limited to just two to four students per class, this course offers an ideal blend of theory and practice.
Start with classroom demonstrations that build your understanding, then step aboard a 33-foot Pearson sailboat for hands-on training. You’ll master essential bareboat cruising skills while meeting American Sailing’s 104 certification standards, gaining both confidence and expertise.

ASA 104 is the American Sailing coastal cruising course for sailors who have already taken ASA 103 and are interested in increasing their coastal cruising skills. It is a required course for earning an International Proficiency Certificate (IPC). Charter companies around the world recognize and often require an IPC for their bareboat charters.
In ASA 104 students learn how to sail a sloop-rigged, auxiliary powered 30 to 45 foot sailboat during a multi-day cruise upon inland/coastal waters in moderate/heavy winds and sea conditions. This ASA course covers provisioning, boat systems, auxiliary engines, advanced sail trim, coastal navigation, anchoring, mooring, docking, emergency operations, weather, and more.

Temperatures on Flathead Lake can be up to 20 degrees cooler than on land. We recommend dressing in layers and packing a warm, waterproof jacket to stay comfortable. While Dayton has its charm, dining options are limited. To keep your energy up, we suggest bringing your own lunch, snacks, and plenty of water each day. For class, make sure you have your ASA textbook(s), ASA logbook, and a pencil for taking notes. Being well-prepared ensures you can focus on mastering your sailing skills.

Go Sail Flathead Lake typically operates from Memorial Day through mid-September, weather and Flathead Lake’s water levels permitting.
Most summer days bring steady 10–15 knot winds from the east, clear blue skies, and a refreshing breeze off the lake—perfect for smooth, exhilarating sailing. But this is Montana, where the weather has a mind of its own. Your safety is always our top priority, so we monitor conditions closely. You’ll receive a confirmation 7 days before your scheduled lesson, and if the forecast looks uncertain, we’ll work with you to reschedule.
Our favorite sailing routes showcase the breathtaking waters between Dayton’s shoreline, the rugged beauty of Wild Horse Island, and the open expanse of Big Arm Bay—an area known for consistent, spirited winds.
