What’s Missing From Your Glacier National Park Itinerary
Over 3 million visitors go to Glacier National Park each year, many of them from outside Montana. While friendly locals are happy to share tips on what to do after visiting the “Crown of the Continent”, there’s not always enough time to fit everything in if you don’t plan ahead.
Our ASA sailing instructors know Flathead Lake and the surrounding area well, and we’re always happy to share some advice on where to go next. If you want to add sailing and local hidden gems to your Glacier National Park itinerary, you’ll want to add these ideas to your list of things to do.
Sail Flathead Lake
If you’re visiting Glacier National Park in the summer, Flathead Lake is a must-visit. As one of the largest lakes in the United States, it is a haven for watersports, swimming, and boating in the warmer months. If you want to try sailing for the first time or add some nautical miles if you’re experienced, Go Sail Flathead Lake has sailing courses for all abilities. Staying in Whitefish or Bigfork is a nice halfway point if you want to fit both the national park and sailing into a Glacier National Park itinerary.
Sun Point Nature Trail
At Go Sail Flathead Lake, we can’t get enough time around the water. Naturally, St. Mary Lake is one of our favorite locations in the park. When you visit Glacier National Park, hike out to Sun Point, where you’ll have stunning views of the teal waters, pine forests, and snow-capped peaks.
While most travelers take in the views along Going-to-the-Sun Road, too many miss beauty on the east side of the park. It’s also a short hike to St. Mary Falls and Virginia Falls, two of the park’s most scenic areas.
Seeing Mountain Views from the Water
Montana is home to the stunning Rocky Mountains, which are beautiful no matter where you view them from. But one unique experience at Flathead Lake is seeing the Rocky Mountains from the water. Watching the towering Salish Mountain Range reflect off the clear blue waters is one of the sights that make Flathead Lake so special.
Eat and Drink Local
Your Glacier National Park itinerary shouldn’t end after your adventure in the park. Montana has an excellent culinary scene, with fresh local ingredients, creative chefs, and artisanal products. Add Sailing to Your Glacier National Park Itinerary
Glacier National Park may be your main reason to visit Montana, but adding Flathead Lake to your itinerary can make your trip even more memorable. After hiking the Highline Trail or taking in the views from Hidden Lake, you can head south to experience glacier country a little differently. Instead of seeing glaciers from afar, you can sail across the glacier-fed waters of Flathead Lake.
