Flathead Events in September
September is a beautiful time of year in Montana, as the weather begins to cool, the days grow shorter, and the mountains show the first signs of fall. It’s also right before school begins and the busy holiday season arrives, so there’s no better time to go sailing before the season ends.
At Go Sail Flathead Lake, our ASA sailing instructors are still around to teach you how to sail and explore the beautiful area around Flathead Lake. Here are some of the fun events and attractions to add to your September itinerary.
Sail Over Labor Day Weekend
While our ASA sailing instructors and students are always sad to see the sailing season come to an end, sailing over Labor Day weekend is one of our favorite moments of the year at Go Sail Flathead Lake. The weather is usually still beautiful, the air is crisp, and you may even see the leaves beginning to change color as you sail around Flathead Lake.
Whether you want to get your first sailing lessons before winter or want to take another sail before the season ends, Labor Day weekend is your best chance to do it.
Flathead Quilt Show
One local tradition where visitors can learn a new skill besides sailing is the annual Quilt Show held by the Flathead Quilter’s Guild. The event is held at the Flathead County Fairgrounds on September 18 and 19 and features handmade quilts for sale. There is also food, a raffle, and vendors happy to answer guests’ questions. With temperatures getting colder, a handmade quilt can make a great holiday gift!
Bear Hug Contra Dance Festival
From September 11 to 13, the Missoula Folklore Society throws one of the best dance and music festivals in the Flathead Lake region. The three-day event is held near Flathead Lake and gives visitors a chance to dance, make new friends, and swim or canoe. The cost is $250 to $305, but it includes music, meals, and even shared lodging.
Lakeside Farmers Market
Montana has a wonderful local food scene, backed by an excellent selection of local produce and handmade goods. The Lakeside Farmers Market near Flathead Lake is still open every Saturday through late September and is a great place to sample local food and bring some back after your sailing trip. The market features local vendors selling everything from fresh fruit to homemade sourdough bread, with over 50 local farmers, cooks, and artists.

While summer is the busiest time on Flathead Lake, sailors shouldn’t overlook September. Labor Day weekend is the last chance for you to sail, and it is one of our favorite times to experience Montana.
