Even though it is surrounded by thousands of square miles of wilderness, getting to Flathead Lake is surprisingly easy, and the journey is often as beautiful as the destination. Here’s everything you need to know about traveling to Flathead Lake, with top tips for planning your trip:

From Bozeman

If you’re combining a trip to Yellowstone National Park with a visit to Glacier National Park and Flathead Lake, you may be wondering: How far is Flathead Lake from Bozeman? Flathead Lake is about 240 miles from Bozeman, Montana, and the drive takes roughly four hours. The most direct route from Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport to Flathead Lake will pass through miles of breathtaking landscapes, then Missoula, and end in Polson, the southernmost town of the lake, making a perfect Montana road trip.

From Kalispell

Flying into Glacier Park International Airport in Kalispell is the most efficient way to reach both Flathead Lake and Glacier National Park. While not directly on the lake, Kalispell is a short drive away and ideal for maximizing your time at both the Flathead and Glacier.

From Missoula

Another option is flying into the Missoula Airport. Missoula is located south of Flathead Lake, and it takes around one hour and fifteen minutes to drive to Polson. However, for travelers who are eager to see the Montana countryside, the drive is a highlight, especially when taking US–93 or Montana Hwy 35 along the shores of the lake.

Check out these vibrant towns for accommodation around Flathead Lake, listed from the north side of the lake to the south:

Whitefish – Whitefish is a picturesque mountain town, popular with skiers in the winter. It offers trendy restaurants and breweries with a charming, walkable downtown. It is only a 30-minute drive to Glacier National Park.

Kalispell – Due to Kalispell’s airport and proximity to both Flathead Lake and Glacier National Park (only a 40-minute drive), Kalispell is a convenient choice.

Bigfork – Bigfork sits right on the lake’s northeastern shore, with a walkable, historic town center. Lovers of the arts appreciate Bigfork’s galleries and musical theater. It takes a little over 40 minutes to reach Glacier from Bigfork.

Lakeside – On the north-western shore, lies Lakeside, a quiet town focused on relaxed waterfront accommodations and activities. It is about one hour away from Glacier National Park.

Polson – On the southern end of the lake is Polson, making it 1.5 hours from Glacier. Choose Polson for affordable lodging options while staying right on the lake.

Tips for Planning Your Trip

  • No matter which airport you choose, renting a car is strongly recommended. Public transportation around Flathead Lake is extremely limited, and the more remote places of interest will require a car.
  • For the peak months of July and August, as well as holidays, make reservations for accommodation, car rentals, and activities early.
